1931-S Wheat Penny

In 1931, the Lincoln penny suffered a lean year in coin production. Only 866,000 wheat pennies were minted that year, making wheatbacks from 1931 very rare and highly valuable pennies for coin collectors.

The 1931-S wheat penny, even in its lowest grades, could fetch $100 at the very least. This has increased the marketability of such a coin. Coin collectors who have obtained a 1931-S wheat penny even go to the extent of sending their coins to a coin authenticity and grading service, such PCGS, ICG or ANACS, to ensure the protection and value of their collection.

The 1931-S Lincoln Wheat Cent had the second lowest number minted at 866,000 with the rare 1909-S VDB being the lowest at 484,000.

Collectors keep in mind certain “key dates” for Lincoln pennies, such as the 1921, the 1921-D, and the 1916-D. However, semi-key coins, such as the 1931-S are even harder to collect because of their rarity.

While a 1931-S wheat penny may not be the rarest or most expensive wheat penny in existence, such as in the case of a 1909-S VDB wheat penny, a 1914-D or a 1922-plain wheatback, but still remains an important coin to have for many collectors. These types of wheat pennies escalate in price up to triple of their actual face value if they remain in good condition and are not so badly damaged, or their detail worn off the face of the coin.
