1909-S VDB Wheat Pennies
If you are a coin collector, you will certainly have heard of wheat pennies. These pennies have the face of President Abraham Lincoln engraved on the front of the coin. These wheat pennies are so-called because of a sheaf of wheat on the reverse side. They are considered quite rare, some even more than others. They are often sought after by collectors and can be found in online and private auctions, as well as in private sales.
In 1909 in San Francisco, a wheat penny was minted with the initials “V.D.B.” on the reverse side which stood for the name of its designer, Victor David Brenner. For this batch of coins with the initials die-cast at the bottom of stalks of wheat, only 484,000 were produced and went into circulation, in part because the general public disliked that Brenner’s initials were so prominently displayed on the coin.

Today the 1909-S VDB wheat penny is among the most rare and most popularly sought-after by coin collectors. Part of its rarity stems from its being the first Lincoln penny ever to enter into circulation. It is also the first ever coin to have the now-ubiquitous “In God We Trust” inscribed on its face.
A high grade 1909-S VDB wheat penny in good condition can be worth anywhere from $6,000 to $12,000!
