Clean Your Wheat Pennies With A Rock Tumbler

Many coin collectors find their treasures using a metal detector.  Coins that are found in the ground, especially wheat pennies that have been there for many years, are going to be very dirty.

Or maybe you just want to brighten up your dingy old wheat pennies to make them look better.

Cleaning your wheat pennies with a rock tumbler can make a huge difference. From personal experience we have seen unrecognizable pennies go into the tumbler and come out very clean and readable!

Items Needed:

  • Rock Tumbler
  • Rocks (get the smallest bag of the smallest aquarium rocks you can find)
  • Water
  • Dish Washing Liquid

Steps: (make sure to read and understand the directions for your specific tumbler)

  • Fill each tumbler with about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of the aquarium rocks
  • Add enough wheat pennies so that the tumbler is about 1/2 full
  • Cover with water
  • Add a small squirt of dish washing liquid

Depending on how dirty your coins are, you may need to run the tumbler for 2 hours or longer and you also may need to change the water every couple of hours and add more dish washing liquid.

NOTE: Never mix your pennies with your silver coins.  The silver coins will turn a pinkish color from the pennies.  That's why we recommend a dual drum rock tumbler.

NOTE: ALWAYS USE CAUTION WHEN ATTEMPTING TO CLEAN ANY OF YOUR COLLECTIBLE COINS!

Are We Running Out of Wheat Pennies to Collect?

How many times have you made a purchase at the store, and when you got your change you hardly waited until you got to the car to check the pennies to see if you have any wheaties?  Better yet, how many times in the past have you gotten a hand full of change and actually found wheat pennies?

I can remember when I was younger, much younger... it seemed as though I would find Wheat Pennies much more often in change.  Those finds are very rare these days.  What could be the reason?

Of course with technology and direct deposit, hardly ever carrying cash etc etc... makes it even harder to find Wheat Pennies when you never use cash to pay for your items.  If you don't use cash, you won't get change back right?  I guess maybe the Wheaties are out there, but since I'm not handling as much change these days, I'm just not seeing them.

Or could it be that all the Wheat Pennies are being collected and not many are out there for us to find in change anymore?  Obviously as time goes on, more and more collectors collecting the same thing... well there's the supply and demand aspect of it.

Either way.. it seems as though purchasing Lincoln Wheat Cents from trade shows, flea markets and places like Ebay has become the new way to find our precious collectibles.

Are the days of finding in our change long gone?

Use Ketchup to Clean Your Wheat Pennies?

NOTE: ALWAYS USE CAUTION WHEN ATTEMPTING TO CLEAN ANY OF YOUR COLLECTIBLE COINS!

It's always interesting to hear what products people use to clean coins.  Of course there are some great coin cleaner products on the market, but why not use something that's right there in your home already...  ummmm, RIGHT IN YOUR FRIDGE!

How To Clean Your Wheat Pennies With Ketchup

Sounds kinda crazy huh?  But it is true... the acid from the tomatoes will definitely clean those wheat pennies up!  It's been proven time and time again!

Just use a small container and cover the pennies with ketchup and let them soak a while.  Wipe them off and you'll be amazed at how clean they got from using ketchup!

1926-s Lincoln Wheat Cent Error

Wheat Cent errors are very popular among collectors.  The error on this one is a reverse die clash and as you can see from the pictures, it's in great shape!

A die clash on a coin is when one die strikes the other die without the planchet between them.  The results of the die clash leaves details from the obverse die on the reverse die and vice versa.
